You may have thought spots don’t happen till puberty but baby acne is a thing and here’s why.

Babies have really sensitive skin so don’t worry if you see little spots on their skin. Just like teenage (and adult) acne their skin might be a little red and you might see small white or red pimples. But this is totally normal.

Baby acne might not appear straight away, they might develop it a couple of weeks after birth. Don’t worry though as it doesn’t stick around for long and it will clear up, usually within a few weeks.

Cause of Baby Acne

There is no real reason as to why babies get acne, experts have said that it could be due to the hormones they have received from the mother. The hormones from the end of pregnancy are still circulating in baby. These hormones stimulate the glands which produce oil and because they are sluggish they cause pimples to form.

How to Treat Baby Acne

Always consult your pediatrician or your GP for advice. There really isn’t a lot you can do to get rid of it, as time really is the best healer. However there are a few things you can do.

  • Leave it alone as best you can. If your baby isn’t bothered by it, don’t let it bother you because it’s going to clear up.
  • Never scrub your babies skin. Like we have already said, babies skin in very sensitive, so scrubbing will make it worse.
  • Very gently wash your baby’s face with a mild baby soap or just warm water and gently pat dry.
  • Try dabbing a bit of your breast milk on the affected areas. Some moms have said that this helps.
